Algiers, Algeria | February 4th, 2025 — Algeria has taken a decisive step in its fight against cancer with the installation of 22 specialized sub-commissions under the National Commission for the Prevention and Fight Against Cancer. The ceremony, held in Algiers on Tuesday, was presided over by Minister of Health Abdelhak Saihi and marks a significant milestone in the nation’s relentless battle against the disease.

The move comes as Algeria prepares for the upcoming National Conference on Cancer Prevention and Control, scheduled for May. Minister Saihi emphasized that the establishment of these sub-commissions aligns with the commemoration of World Cancer Day and the first anniversary of the National Commission’s creation by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health, particularly by ensuring optimal care for cancer patients.

Highlighting the crucial role of awareness and mobilization, Minister Saihi announced a dedicated cancer awareness week to be held in the wilaya of Tipaza from February 16 to 20. This initiative is expected to bolster public understanding of cancer prevention and early detection measures.

Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry Ouacim Kouidri underscored the necessity for inter-ministerial collaboration and institutional synergy to enhance cancer care. He stressed that Algeria has prioritized the availability of essential treatments and is actively working towards pharmaceutical self-sufficiency. “We have initiated multiple projects aimed at local production of cancer medications, a strategic move to reduce dependency on imports and ensure uninterrupted access to life-saving treatments,” he stated.

Professor Adda Boubedjar, President of the National Commission for the Prevention and Fight Against Cancer, outlined the responsibilities of the newly installed sub-commissions. Their primary mandate is to prepare for the national conference, which will formulate a comprehensive cancer strategy for the 2025-2035 period. According to Prof. Boubedjar, the strategy will be structured around five key pillars: prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis, therapeutic management, and patient care pathway optimization. Additionally, it will emphasize scientific research and the social reintegration of recovered patients, with prevention identified as a paramount factor in reducing cancer-related mortality.

The installation ceremony saw the participation of several high-ranking officials, including Minister of Pharmaceutical Production Ouacim Kouidri, Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security Fayçal Bentaleb, the President of the National Agency for Health Security (ANSS), and Professor Kamel Sanhadji. Their presence signaled a unified governmental front in addressing one of the most pressing health challenges in Algeria today.
