Algeria Reiterates Determination to Hold UN Security Council Accountable for Palestine

ALGIERS- During the 161st regular session of the Arab League Ministerial Council held in Cairo on Wednesday, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering determination to continue its efforts until the United Nations Security Council fulfills its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people.
In his address to the council, Minister Attaf stated that Algeria, under the firm directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will persist in its efforts and initiatives until the Security Council fully and unequivocally assumes its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people.
Attaf emphasized Algeria’s call for “necessary steps to enable the brotherly State of Palestine to become a full member of the UN.” He stressed that this demand has transcended beyond the Palestinian or Arab realm, garnering support from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the African Union (AU), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Highlighting the significant responsibility entrusted to the Arab League, Attaf underscored the monumental duty towards the Palestinian people as the custodians of an entrenched right, defenders of a just cause, and guardians of a legitimate national project.
Addressing the need for bolder Arab stances, Attaf urged for a more audacious and courageous Arab position to match the immense sacrifices and legendary resistance of the people in Gaza. He emphasized the importance of reclaiming a leading role in defending the central cause of the Arab-Muslim nation to assert Arab influence on the global stage.
Attaf stressed the consolidation of Arab positions vis-à-vis the Zionist occupier diplomatically, politically, and economically. He called for initiatives to mobilize international pressure against the Zionist aggression and the ensuing humanitarian catastrophe.
The minister outlined three priority levels, including practical measures to halt bloodshed in Gaza, efforts to challenge the occupier’s impunity, and advocating for a political solution that respects Palestinian self-determination.
Expressing support for actions at international forums, Attaf advocated for action at the UN General Assembly to sanction the Zionist entity by freezing its membership, drawing parallels with historical measures against apartheid in South Africa.
Finally, Attaf emphasized the importance of reinforcing the prospects for a political solution and rejecting any Zionist narrative on the future of Gaza, affirming the Palestinians’ right to determine their own destiny.
