Algiers, Algeria | July 15th, 2024 — The Ministry of Fisheries and Halieutic Productions has announced the resumption of red coral fishing in Algeria, outlining a detailed plan to ensure sustainable exploitation and economic benefits.
During a press conference held on Monday, alongside the closing ceremony of the 2023-2024 academic year for sector institutes and schools, Minister Ahmed Badani confirmed that all necessary measures are in place to restart red coral fishing activities. Emphasizing the significance of these steps, he indicated that the activity would recommence as soon as possible.
Sustainable Exploitation Strategy
Minister Badani revealed that ten designated areas across the country have been identified for red coral fishing. Annually, two of these areas will be utilized, with each exploited area being given a five-year rest period to allow for coral regeneration. This approach ensures the sustainable exploitation of this valuable resource. The necessary procedures concerning equipment and monitoring have been completed in coordination with the Ministry of Health.
Economic Impact
The minister highlighted the economic potential of coral fishing, projecting an annual revenue of 160 million dinars for the public treasury. He also estimated the creation of 400 direct jobs and 900 indirect jobs from El Kala in the east to Tlemcen in the west.
Regulatory Oversight
To oversee the implementation and regulation of red coral fishing activities, provincial commissions have been established in El Tarf, Annaba, Skikda, and Jijel.
International Initiatives and Training
Minister Badani announced a new phase for the fisheries sector, involving the participation of Algerian inspectors in the international joint inspection of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean for the first time. This initiative aims to provide professional experience and enhance Algeria’s standing within the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
Regarding the 2023-2024 academic year, the minister reported a significant increase in training for integrated aquaculture, with over 4,400 farmers trained—a 55% rise compared to the previous year. This indicates growing interest among farmers in freshwater aquaculture, particularly tilapia farming, encouraged by government incentives and tax advantages.
Focus on Specialized Training
Minister Badani also highlighted the department’s commitment to specialized training, noting that 15,567 trainees attended the sector’s nine training institutions this academic year, a 20% increase from the previous year. He commended the educators and administrative staff for their dedication and introduced a new program for training trainers in entrepreneurship and innovation, along with an incubator for innovative projects.
Recognition of Contributions
The ceremony concluded with honors for new graduates, sector officials, and retirees, celebrating their contributions and achievements in advancing Algeria’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
