Algeria Revitalizes Its Public Transport Fleet with Major Asian Manufacturers: Daewoo, Higer to Launch Bus Production in 2025

Algiers, Algeria | February 26th, 2025 — Algeria is set to witness a significant boost in its public transport sector as two leading Asian manufacturers, South Korea’s Daewoo and China’s Higer, gear up to commence bus production in the country. According to Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud, both companies will launch assembly operations in 2025, marking a pivotal step toward modernizing Algeria’s aging public transport fleet.

Speaking before the Committee on Transport and Telecommunications at the People’s National Assembly (APN) on Monday, Minister Sayoud underscored the urgent need to renew and expand the country’s terrestrial passenger transport network. “More than 70% of the population relies on land transportation. Our objective is to implement sustainable solutions that will rejuvenate and reinforce the national transport fleet, spanning urban, suburban, inter-wilaya, and inter-communal travel,” he stated.

The minister acknowledged that the current domestic production, particularly through the National Company for Industrial Vehicles (SNVI), has yet to reach an optimal production capacity. However, he confirmed that SNVI is undergoing significant expansion efforts, with a production target of 104 buses dedicated to the wilayas of Annaba, Constantine, and Oran. Assembly operations are scheduled to begin between April and May 2025, with deliveries expected before the year’s end.

In a major development, Higer will relaunch its assembly unit in Sétif, which had been dormant since the imprisonment of its local partner, Ahmed Mazouz, in the aftermath of Algeria’s sweeping anti-corruption crackdown following the ousting of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April 2019. Meanwhile, Daewoo is poised to re-enter the Algerian market by establishing its assembly plant in Chlef, with operations set to begin between April and May 2025. The return of Daewoo is particularly noteworthy, given its historical prominence as one of Algeria’s leading automotive distributors in the 1990s.

The introduction of these two manufacturers aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to revamp its transportation sector and reduce dependence on aging and inefficient fleets. By integrating global expertise and advanced production capabilities, the Algerian government aims to enhance service quality, ensure greater passenger safety, and stimulate local industrial growth.

With the imminent launch of bus assembly by Daewoo and Higer, coupled with SNVI’s expansion, Algeria is poised to take a decisive leap toward a modernized and self-sufficient public transport infrastructure. This initiative is expected to alleviate transportation bottlenecks, improve mobility across the nation, and reinforce Algeria’s commitment to industrial and economic development.
