With Overwhelming Continental Support, Algeria Reaffirms Its Leadership Role in Promoting Stability, Dialogue, and Peace across Africa
Algiers, Algeria | April 15th, 2025 — Algeria has secured a seat on the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) for a three-year mandate, following a decisive vote that underscored the country’s pivotal role in championing peace and regional stability on the continent. The announcement was made in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hailing the outcome as a well-deserved recognition of Algeria’s unwavering diplomatic engagement and strategic influence under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
In the third round of voting, held during the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Algeria won the overwhelming support of 34 African states, decisively defeating Libya, which garnered 15 votes. This commanding result reflects Algeria’s credibility, consistent mediation efforts, and principled foreign policy rooted in African unity and sovereignty.
“This victory stands as a testament to Algeria’s active diplomacy and enduring commitment to peace, dialogue, and the resolution of conflicts through African mechanisms,” the Ministry stated, emphasizing the growing trust placed in Algeria by its continental peers.
The election took place in the Ethiopian capital with the presence of Algeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, who played a key role in consolidating diplomatic efforts and rallying support for Algeria’s candidacy.
Algeria’s return to the Council marks a strategic milestone in its regional and international diplomacy, enabling it to once again contribute robustly to decision-making processes that shape Africa’s collective security architecture. The country’s presence on the Council is expected to bolster initiatives related to conflict prevention, crisis management, post-conflict reconstruction, and the protection of national sovereignties across the continent.
This new mandate consolidates Algeria’s reputation as a reliable and impartial actor in African affairs, particularly at a time when the continent faces complex security challenges ranging from armed conflicts to institutional fragility and transnational threats.
“Under President Tebboune’s leadership, Algeria remains steadfast in its mission to promote pan-African solidarity, safeguard peace, and support sustainable development through African-led solutions,” the Ministry added.
As Algeria takes its seat on the Council, expectations are high for it to inject momentum into peacebuilding efforts, offer strategic guidance in times of crisis, and uphold the foundational values of the African Union — unity, cooperation, and resilience.
