Algiers, Algeria | February 11th, 2025 — Algeria is poised to make significant strides in its sugar industry as the Tafadis Sugar Refinery, located in the Larbatache Industrial Zone, gears up to commence production. During his visit to the site, Minister of Industry Sifi Ghrieb inspected the progress of the state-of-the-art facility, which is set to enter its trial phase by the end of March before fully launching operations.

The refinery, now managed by the state-owned Madar Holding after being transferred as part of Algeria’s asset recovery initiative, boasts an impressive production capacity of 2,000 tons per day. This includes 1,300 tons of white sugar, 200 tons of brown sugar, and 450 tons of liquid sugar, addressing both domestic consumption and export potential. Equipped with cutting-edge sugar refining technologies, the facility aims to enhance Algeria’s self-sufficiency and strengthen its position in the regional sugar market.

Once fully operational, Tafadis will generate approximately 1,200 job opportunities—500 direct and 700 indirect—significantly boosting employment in the industrial sector. Moreover, the project aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to revitalize industrial assets and maximize their contribution to national economic growth.

Looking ahead, Madar Holding plans to expand its sugar production capabilities further by establishing another refinery in Ouargla dedicated to processing sugar from sugar beets. This second phase of development, expected to be completed within three years, will further reinforce Algeria’s efforts to reduce reliance on sugar imports and promote agro-industrial integration.

Minister Ghrieb lauded the progress achieved in repurposing confiscated industrial assets and commended the dedication of the refinery’s workforce, composed largely of skilled Algerian professionals. He emphasized that the Tafadis project serves as a model of Algeria’s commitment to reclaiming and revitalizing industrial ventures for the benefit of the national economy.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed the government’s determination, under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to accelerate the reactivation of recovered industrial units, ensuring they contribute effectively to Algeria’s economic diversification and food security agenda.
