Algiers, Algeria | September 1st, 2024 — Algeria is poised to make a significant leap in its agricultural sector with the imminent launch of the “Baladna” project, a monumental endeavor aimed at producing milk powder locally. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Chorfa, announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for this Algerian-Qatari joint venture will take place this Tuesday, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for the nation’s dairy industry.
Speaking at the national meetings with investors in agricultural lands under the concession framework, organized by the Office for the Development of Industrial Agriculture in Saharan Lands (ODAS), Minister Chorfa emphasized the strategic importance of the “Baladna” project. The initial phase will focus on water exploration, a critical step in laying the groundwork for this extensive agricultural initiative.
The “Baladna” project, formalized through a framework agreement signed in April between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Qatari company “Baladna,” in partnership with Algeria’s National Investment Fund (FNI), is set to reshape the country’s dairy production landscape. Spanning an expansive 117,000 hectares, the project comprises three integrated hubs, each featuring a cereal and fodder production farm, a dairy cattle farm, and a milk and meat processing facility, including a state-of-the-art milk powder production plant.
Once operational, the “Baladna” project is expected to meet 50% of Algeria’s national milk powder demand, significantly reducing reliance on imports. Additionally, the project will enhance the domestic supply of red meat and contribute to the expansion of the national cattle herd, bolstering Algeria’s food security and agricultural sustainability.
With an estimated investment of $3.5 billion, “Baladna” is more than just an agricultural project—it is a cornerstone of Algeria’s economic diversification strategy. The initiative is projected to create 5,000 direct jobs, offering substantial economic benefits to the regions involved.
The project will be executed in four phases, with the first phase slated for completion by 2026, marking the commencement of full-scale production. “Baladna” is set to be a game-changer in Algeria’s agricultural sector, paving the way for self-sufficiency in dairy production and positioning the country as a leader in agro-industrial development.
