Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Houria Meddahi has emphasized the critical importance of this global event in promoting Algeria’s tourism potential and the authenticity of its traditional crafts. In a coordination meeting held Monday, the minister evaluated Algeria’s participation in the 28th International Handicrafts Exhibition in Milan, Italy, and laid the groundwork for the nation’s involvement in Expo 2025.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, Algeria’s participation in the Milan exhibition was nothing short of exceptional. Representing Africa as the guest of honor, the Algerian delegation showcased the country’s artisanal and cultural richness. “The event offered a unique platform to demonstrate Algeria’s craftsmanship and culinary traditions while engaging with an international audience. The strong turnout by the Algerian diaspora in Italy further amplified the success of this initiative,” the statement noted.

During the meeting, Minister Maddahi underscored the significance of representing Algeria in international exhibitions. “These events hold immense economic, cultural, and promotional value, serving as a gateway to elevate Algeria’s image as a premier tourism destination. Our goals must focus on maximizing economic returns, including increased handicraft sales and boosting foreign tourist inflows. Evaluating past shortcomings will be vital to refining our strategies for future engagements,” she remarked.

Detailed evaluations of Algeria’s Milan experience were presented by the Director-General of the National Chamber of Traditional Crafts and Handicrafts, as well as other key representatives of associated institutions. The reports highlighted the diversity and richness of Algeria’s participation, which included traditional dishes, desserts, and artisanal exhibits that resonated with visitors. Minister Madahi also issued directives to ensure broader representation from all regions, particularly the southern provinces, in future international exhibitions.

Strategic Preparations for Expo 2025

Looking ahead to Expo 2025, Minister Maddahi outlined a roadmap emphasizing excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. Central to Algeria’s strategy is the exclusive integration of modern digital technologies across proposed activities. “Our participation must align with the Expo’s theme, Designing a Future Society for Our Lives, to underscore Algeria’s commitment to innovation and societal progress,” the minister stated.

She also announced plans to engage university students specializing in translation to support artisans during the event. “This initiative will provide young professionals with invaluable experience while helping artisans market their products effectively,” Maddahi explained. Training sessions focusing on exhibition and sales techniques for artisans, coordinated with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education, were also mandated to enhance their competitiveness on the global stage.

The minister further stressed the importance of fostering international partnerships with institutions specializing in tourism and traditional crafts. “Building strategic alliances is essential to opening new markets and amplifying Algeria’s reach,” she added.

In line with her directive for meticulous preparation, Minister Maddahi instructed all stakeholders to finalize their plans by the end of this month. “Only a well-orchestrated effort can ensure Algeria’s participation at Expo 2025 becomes a defining moment for the nation, showcasing our cultural and economic potential to the world,” she concluded.
