Algeria Sets Its Sights on Mobile Phone Industry Revitalization: CREA’s Strategic Proposals Lead Way

Algiers, Algeria | October 7th, 2024 — On October 6, 2024, Mr. Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA), led the closing session of the committee responsible for drafting technical proposals for the assembly, production, and development of mobile phones in Algeria. The meeting took place at the Sheraton Hotel in Algiers and represents a crucial turning point in the country’s efforts to reinvigorate its mobile phone industry, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The initiative to revive the industry followed a key meeting in May 2024, where Mr. Moula met with the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, and the Minister of Post and Telecommunications. The aim was to restore Algeria’s position in the global telecommunications manufacturing arena, ensuring that the country not only assembles devices but also plays a strategic role in the development and innovation of mobile technologies.

A Collaborative Five-Month Effort Involving Industry Leaders

The past five months have seen active participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including major players in the electronics and mobile phone sectors. These entities pooled their industrial experience and technical knowledge to offer practical insights into the development of Algeria’s mobile phone sector. Among them were leading mobile device manufacturers, technology experts, and industrial companies, all of whom shared their expertise to help shape the future of this industry in the country.

In addition to the collaborative efforts of national and international experts, the committee was supported by an external consultant, appointed by the Ministry of Industry, who played a critical role in shaping the technical proposals. The committee was tasked with addressing Algeria’s need to integrate cutting-edge research and development (R&D) capabilities into the production process to ensure long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

In a show of solidarity and intellectual exchange, the closing session also welcomed several prominent figures from the scientific and research community. Among the distinguished attendees was Dr. Belkacem Haba, a renowned Algerian researcher with vast experience in electronics and mobile technologies. Dr. Haba, along with other experts, contributed vital insights that reinforced the importance of technological innovation.
