ALGIERS- Algeria’s presidential elections will indeed take place within the timeframe stipulated by the constitution, reaffirmed by the official Algerian Press Service (APS). In a dispatch released yesterday, the APS responded to rumors circulating regarding potential disruptions to Algeria’s electoral calendar.
The presidential term, initiated in December 2019, is set to expire at the end of 2024, in accordance with the Algerian constitution adopted via referendum in November 2020. The APS statement dismisses speculations about postponing the presidential election scheduled for late 2024.
“The elections will take place as scheduled by the constitution, out of respect for the constitution and for the Algerian people, the sole holders of sovereignty,” read the dispatch from the official agency. The message conveyed by the APS is clear: in Algeria, there exists a republic governed by laws and an electoral schedule to be adhered to. The presidential election will be subject to discussion when the time comes, but that moment has not yet arrived.
The origin of fake news regarding the alleged postponement of the presidential elections can be traced back to the propagandist machinery of the Moroccan makhzen, which spares no effort in spreading rumors about Algeria.
The APS notes that the scriptwriters of the Moroccan makhzen have employed considerable imagination in depicting their desires as information or even plausible hypotheses about events that are purported to shape Algeria’s political landscape in 2024. “Without shame, the makhzen’s propaganda machine excels in spreading fake news about Algeria and Algerian elections,” the APS stated emphatically.
The obsession of the makhzen with Algeria is evident. The postponement of the presidential election is among the scenarios propagated by the makhzen’s propagandist machine, with certain Algerian sources being vehemently denounced by the official Algerian agency. The APS cited a certain “makhzeno-Zionist in Paris” without providing a name, as well as “French radios whose allegiance to the makhzen has long been established.”
“Turn your gaze toward the royal palace instead of El Mouradia,” advises the APS to the makhzen’s propaganda machine. Indeed, with the familial disputes within the Moroccan royal palace laid bare by the Spanish press in recent months and fueled by the emergence of a new circle close to King Mohammed VI, such as the Azaitar siblings, the makhzen’s relay stations have more pertinent matters to uncover about the ongoings in Rabat and various palaces. Instead of concocting scenarios about delaying the presidential elections in Algeria.
