ALGIERS- Today, Sonelgaz is poised to finalize 19 contracts with national and foreign companies to kickstart the construction of twenty photovoltaic solar power plants. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Algeria’s ambitious renewable energy agenda, particularly within the framework of the 1000 megawatts and 2000 megawatts projects, aiming to eventually produce 15,000 megawatts of solar electricity. This initiative is projected to save several billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

In a statement yesterday on national radio, Professor Boukhalfa Yaïci, Director-General of the Green Energy Cluster Algeria, announced Sonelgaz’s plans to sign multiple contracts today with both national and primarily Chinese companies for the construction of 20 photovoltaic solar power plants. These projects, part of the 2000 megawatts and 1000 megawatts initiatives, will involve Algerian companies responsible for 42% of the project implementations.

The 2000 megawatts project encompasses the construction of 15 photovoltaic solar power plants across 12 provinces, with individual capacities ranging from 80 to 220 megawatts. Meanwhile, the Solar 1000 project entails the construction of five plants across five provinces, with capacities ranging from 50 to 300 megawatts each. These initiatives are integral components of the overarching 15,000 megawatts program, with plans for additional similar projects in the country in the coming months.

Regarding project timelines, Yaïci estimated a 22-month completion period for both initiatives, noting that some of these plants would gradually become operational starting this year.

Exportation Potential

These projects also hold promise for exports. Yaïci acknowledged ongoing discussions between the European Union and Algeria on this matter, highlighting a favorable environment for both parties. He emphasized the importance of Sonelgaz’s role in the overall energy transition strategy, aiming to gradually integrate renewable energies, particularly solar, into the national electricity production mix.

Financing and Integration Rates

Regarding financing, Yaïci clarified that Algeria would fund the projects entirely but stressed the potential for various other financing sources, including public-private partnerships and foreign direct investment, to stimulate this costly energy transition.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the projects would exceed the initially set 35% integration rate, leading to significant natural gas consumption savings and potentially saving six to eight billion cubic meters of natural gas annually with the completion of the 15,000 megawatts solar project.

Efforts to Catch Up

Responding to inquiries about global progress in photovoltaic technology accessibility and affordability, Yaïci acknowledged a lag in Algeria’s solar energy development compared to global trends. However, he expressed optimism that ongoing projects would pave the way for the emergence of a dedicated local solar industry, aligning with global advancements in renewable energy deployment.

Algeria’s concerted efforts in solar energy expansion reflect its commitment to sustainable development and position the country as a key player in the global renewable energy landscape.
