Algiers, Algeria | August 31st, 2024 — On Friday, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, signed a joint declaration in Ljubljana, reaffirming the shared determination of Algeria and Slovenia to “further deepen” their bilateral relations and “explore” avenues for cooperation on global issues.

During his working visit to Slovenia, undertaken on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Minister Attaf and Minister Fajon underscored the “importance of continuing to develop and strengthen their bilateral ties across multiple sectors, including economy, energy, artificial intelligence, digitalization, and migration,” according to the Declaration.

Looking ahead, the ministers committed to pursuing new avenues of cooperation that will benefit both nations. In this context, Algeria and Slovenia welcomed the recent opening of embassies in their respective capitals.

On the economic front, both ministers highlighted economic cooperation as “a cornerstone of our bilateral relations” and pledged to “enhance economic ties between the two countries.” They expressed anticipation for the implementation of the economic cooperation agreement, which has been in force since March 2024.

The ministers also lauded the strengthening of energy cooperation, particularly noting the signing of the annex to the 2022 agreement on natural gas supply between Sonatrach and Geoplin. Furthermore, they welcomed the progress made in bilateral cooperation on migration and security, committing to further development in these areas.

“Throughout our terms, we will continue to closely collaborate on regional and international issues of mutual concern,” the ministers emphasized.

Additionally, the two ministers praised the coordination between their countries’ delegations at the Security Council, particularly on the Palestinian issue. In this context, they urgently called for “an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and safe and unimpeded humanitarian access” to the territory, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.

They also reiterated the “two-state solution as the just, lasting, and final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
