ALGIERS- Algeria has further cemented its position as Spain’s primary supplier of natural gas, covering 42% of the country’s total gas imports last month, surpassing Russia (25.7%) and the United States (18.2%).
This dominance in Spanish natural gas imports marks the third consecutive month (January, February, March 2024) that Algeria has led, as reported by the Iberian newspaper El Español, citing data from Enagás, Spain’s leading natural gas transportation company and technical manager of the Spanish gas system.
The increase in Spanish natural gas imports can be attributed to the rise in gas volumes shipped via the Medgaz pipeline, connecting Beni Saf in western Algeria to Almeria in southern Spain.
From January to March, the volume of Algerian gas entering Spain via Medgaz increased by 15.4% compared to the same period last year, reaching 25.8 terawatt-hours (TWh).
Since the beginning of 2024 (January to March), Algeria has supplied 33.1% of Spain’s total natural gas needs, followed by the United States (24.5%) and Russia (23.1%), according to Enagás statistics.
In 2023, Algeria emerged as Spain’s top gas supplier. Enagás reported that Algeria, providing 29.2% of Spain’s imported gas quantities, surpassed the United States, now in second place, followed by Russia.
Spain imported a total of 397,897 GWh of natural gas in 2023, of which 116,282 GWh (including 21,410 GWh of LNG) originated from Algeria. The United States, as the second-largest supplier, provided 83,898 GWh of LNG (21.1%), followed by Russia, the third-largest supplier with 72,692 GWh of LNG (18.3%). Nigeria ranked fourth in natural gas supply to Spain in 2023, accounting for 13.6% of the total with 53,992 GWh.
