Algiers, Algeria | January 24th, 2025 — Algerian Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, held a pivotal meeting on Thursday with South Africa’s Ambassador, Ndumiso Ndima Ntshinga, to explore and enhance bilateral cooperation across key energy and mining sectors. The discussions, described as highly constructive, underscored the mutual commitment of the two nations to forge deeper ties in advancing sustainable development and economic progress.
The high-level talks, which took place at the Ministry’s headquarters, were attended by senior officials, including the Secretaries of State for Mines and Renewable Energies, alongside other key ministry figures. Both parties praised the “excellent relations” shared between Algeria and South Africa, affirming their shared vision to elevate their partnership to new heights.
Expanding Cooperation Across Energy and Mining Frontiers
Central to the discussions was the reinforcement of cooperation in energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors. Both parties acknowledged the pivotal role of their bilateral partnership in achieving shared objectives and fostering long-term, sustainable economic growth.
A significant focus was placed on strengthening collaboration in research, exploration, and the transformation of critical and strategic mineral resources. These resources, vital to renewable energy industries, present vast opportunities for innovation and industrial development. Both sides expressed a shared determination to harness their respective capabilities in unlocking the full potential of these resources.
Investment and knowledge transfer in the hydrocarbons sector, including oil and gas industries, were also key topics on the agenda. This cooperation aims to bolster technological expertise and develop cutting-edge solutions to meet global energy demands.
Accelerating the Energy Transition with Renewable Energy Projects
The meeting also delved into renewable energy initiatives, emphasizing the importance of joint projects in solar and photovoltaic energy, wind energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen development. Algeria’s ambitious program to produce 15,000 MW of solar photovoltaic electricity was highlighted as a cornerstone of the nation’s energy transition strategy, providing fertile ground for collaboration with South Africa.
Arkab underscored the critical role South Africa could play in supporting Algeria’s renewable energy ambitions, given its advanced expertise and technological capabilities. He described the Algerian energy sector as a promising avenue for South African investments, particularly with the recent implementation of attractive legal and regulatory frameworks designed to encourage foreign investment.
Mutual Commitment to Knowledge Sharing and Technological Advancement
Ambassador Ntshinga reaffirmed South Africa’s readiness to share its vast experience and technological advancements with Algeria. He emphasized the importance of fostering knowledge exchange, technological transfer, and capacity-building initiatives to accelerate the exploration and processing of Algeria’s abundant mineral resources.
“The partnership between Algeria and South Africa is not just a bilateral collaboration; it is a model for how nations can work together to address the global challenges of energy security, sustainability, and economic diversification,” the ambassador stated.
Arkab, for his part, reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to expanding its cooperation with South Africa, calling it a “strategic ally” in advancing Algeria’s development goals. He stressed that the synergies between the two nations, particularly in the energy and mining sectors, would serve as a catalyst for innovation and mutual prosperity.
