ALGIERS- Algeria, a prominent economic, political, and military power in Africa, is undergoing an accelerated international redeployment strategy. Recognized as a pivotal country within the African continent and the Mediterranean basin, Algeria aims to strengthen its rank and influence on the global geopolitical scene. President Tebboune’s initiatives seek to intensify diplomatic actions and revitalize economic partnerships across different regions of the world.
In response to the changing economic landscape, Algeria is diligently working on multiple fronts to diversify its economy. The country’s focus lies in the development of non-hydrocarbon exports and positioning itself as an attractive destination for international investors across various sectors.
The President Abdelmadjid Tebboune embarked on an important two-day working visit to Qatar, a country with which Algeria shares a solid partnership. Notably, the recent launch of the Algerian-Qatari hospital project in Algiers exemplifies their collaboration. Ongoing investments in agribusiness, agriculture, steelmaking, and other sectors further solidify this partnership.
Continuing his diplomatic tour, President Tebboune will visit Beijing, symbolizing a highly significant and strategic state visit. Invited by his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, their discussions will undoubtedly touch upon Algeria’s legitimate ambition to join the coveted BRICS group. The visit also seeks to strengthen economic cooperation between the two friendly nations. China, a global economic powerhouse and a leading member of BRICS alongside Russia, stands as Algeria’s largest trading partner. Furthermore, China has made substantial direct investments in Algeria, spanning sectors such as mining, new energies, hydrocarbons, telecoms, industry, and construction.
The economic and geopolitical stakes for Algeria in joining the BRICS group are significant. Algeria’s potential inclusion as an observer member during the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa holds immense importance. China, among other BRICS members, has already expressed its favorable stance towards Algeria’s aspirations. The President’s visit to Beijing serves as an opportune moment to promote Algeria’s candidacy for BRICS, aiming to benefit from increased foreign direct investments and bolster its international position.
Algeria, characterized by its economic and political stability, exerts influence within its continental and regional environment. Upholding the principles of non-alignment and non-interference in other countries’ internal policies, Algeria leverages its multiple assets to regain international standing. The country actively diversifies its partnerships and relationships, forging strategic alliances through intense diplomatic actions. This strategic redeployment towards Africa, along with increased official visits and exchanges with countries such as China, Russia, Arab nations, the United States, Italy, and Portugal, reflects Algeria’s commitment to transforming its economy.
As Algeria speeds up its redeployment, the nation embraces its role as a key player on the global stage. By intensifying diplomatic endeavors and revitalizing economic partnerships, Algeria seeks to solidify its international influence while driving economic growth. With a focus on diversification, Algeria is poised to thrive and contribute to regional and global prosperity.
