Algeria Stands in Solidarity with Sudan Against External Threats

ALGIERS- Algeria expresses unwavering support for Sudan as it grapples with challenging circumstances, particularly in countering external threats, stated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The Algerian President extended a solemn welcome to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, President of the Sovereignty Council of the Republic of Sudan, currently on a two-day official visit to Algeria.
Following their discussions at the Presidential Palace, President Tebboune, in a joint press statement with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, emphasized Algeria’s solidarity with the Sudanese people in overcoming the difficult situation they face, targeted by what he referred to as “forces of evil.” Algeria has consistently advocated for resolving internal disputes and conflicts through a purely domestic approach, free from foreign interference, asserted President Tebboune. He underlined that the ultimate decision rests with the Sudanese people and their diverse components.
President Tebboune conveyed confidence that Sudan would successfully navigate through the challenges posed by what he described as “shameless aggression” against the country. Acknowledging the longstanding fraternal relations and mutual respect between the Algerian and Sudanese peoples, President Tebboune commended Sudan’s support for Algeria as a member of the UN Security Council. The two nations, he noted, share convergent views on numerous regional and international issues. President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s commitment during its tenure at the Security Council to support just causes in Africa and worldwide, working to mitigate conflicts and tensions threatening state stability and people’s well-being.
In response, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan highlighted that Sudan faces a “conspiracy orchestrated in collusion with regional and international actors.” He expressed satisfaction in knowing that Algeria is actively engaged in every Arab or regional forum for debate or negotiation. The Sudanese President underscored Algeria’s consistent support, noting the Algerian people’s reputation for nationalism and defense of just causes. The convergence of views between Algeria and Sudan on various contemporary issues was also emphasized.
The meeting between President Tebboune and General al-Burhan reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to diplomatic principles, emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution and rejecting foreign interference. This commitment gains significance in light of the current situation in Sudan, torn by violent clashes since April 15, 2023, involving the regular army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohammed Hamdane Dagalo. The latter, supported militarily by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is accused of ethnically motivated massacres, particularly in El-Geneina, as per a damning UN report, suggesting potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Amid the ongoing unrest, Sudan, rich in resources and strategically positioned between the Sahel and the Red Sea, becomes a focal point of geopolitical interest. A UN report underscores the decisive support provided by the UAE to the RSF paramilitaries. It details fuel and weaponry deliveries from Sudan, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Libya, and notably Chad, orchestrated by the UAE, according to sources cited by Le Monde.
