Algeria Strengthens Partnership with the UNDP to Enhance Healthcare, Address Regional Challenges

Algiers, Algeria | December 10th, 2024 — On Tuesday, the Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, held a significant meeting with Natasha Van Rijn, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Algeria, to further solidify the ongoing cooperation between Algeria and UN agencies, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this meeting, both parties reviewed the strategic partnership forged during the pandemic under the “Solidarity Response” project. This partnership demonstrated the crucial role of international cooperation in public health crises, with the UNDP offering invaluable support during this global emergency. The discussions centered on advancing this partnership in alignment with Algeria’s national health priorities, with both sides expressing their commitment to enhancing future collaborations.

A key area of focus was Algeria’s role in providing comprehensive medical care to refugees and displaced persons, especially those crossing the country’s borders. Minister Saihi reassured that all refugees would have access to essential medical services, including vaccination, to prevent health crises in the region.

Furthermore, Minister Saihi emphasized Algeria’s proposal for the establishment of an international vaccination center, which aligns with the country’s commitment to global health security. He highlighted the potential for UN agencies to provide technical assistance in this initiative, underscoring Algeria’s readiness to contribute to disease prevention efforts across the region.

The meeting marked a renewed commitment to deepening Algeria’s engagement in global health initiatives, reaffirming the importance of collective efforts to address regional health challenges and enhance healthcare accessibility. The collaboration between Algeria and the UNDP is poised to play a pivotal role in the region’s health and development trajectory.
