Algiers, Algeria | November 26th, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic move, Algeria, led by its Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, successfully expelled Tzipi Livni, the former Zionist Foreign Minister and convicted war criminal, from the 10th Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) being held in Cascais, Portugal. This decision reflects Algeria’s steadfast commitment to upholding justice and denouncing those associated with war crimes, particularly those involved in the oppression of the Palestinian people.
The controversy surrounding Livni’s participation began when the presence of the former Zionist official at the forum, intended to promote dialogue and peace between civilizations, was revealed just ahead of the event’s opening. This unexpected development shocked the participating delegations, particularly as the UNAOC forum is designed to bring together nations that advocate for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
In response, Algeria, joined by several Arab, Muslim, and pro-Palestinian countries, raised an immediate objection to Livni’s participation. These countries deemed her presence at a forum dedicated to peace and diplomacy as not only contradictory but unacceptable. The Algerian delegation, supported by its allies, firmly demanded that Livni, whom they accuse of war crimes, be removed from the event.
Despite initial assurances from the organizers of the UNAOC forum that Livni would not be a problem, the situation took another turn when she was again seen entering the venue to attend the opening session. This prompted a bold response from the Algerian delegation and its allies, who declared they would boycott the event unless the issue was addressed. In the face of this collective stand, the forum’s organizers had no choice but to retract Livni’s invitation, issuing a formal apology and ensuring her expulsion from the event.
This incident marks a significant diplomatic victory for Algeria, which has long been an advocate for Palestinian rights and has consistently opposed any actions that legitimize those responsible for the oppression of the Palestinian people. Minister Ahmed Attaf’s swift action at the UNAOC forum underscores Algeria’s firm stance on justice and human rights, reinforcing its position as a leading voice in the fight for Palestinian self-determination.
