Algiers, Algeria | December 13th, 2024 — In a new step towards modernizing Algeria’s urban transport network, the Minister of Transport, Saïd Sayoud, announced the imminent signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Transport and the National Company for Industrial Vehicles (SNVI). This partnership aims to produce locally manufactured buses to address the growing demands for urban public transportation across the country.
Speaking during a public parliamentary session chaired by MP Ahsan Hani, Minister Sayoud emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, which aligns with Algeria’s broader vision of enhancing the quality and sustainability of public services. The agreement will initially oversee the production of 104 buses, designated for urban public transportation in Constantine, Oran, and Annaba. Subsequent production phases will cater to other regions experiencing transport shortages.
The manufacturing process is set to commence in April 2025, marking a decisive shift toward bolstering local industries and reducing reliance on imported vehicles. Minister Sayoud highlighted that while public sector efforts are commendable, private sector players, who dominate 95% of urban transport operations, must also contribute by modernizing their fleets. He urged private operators to proactively invest in fleet renewal without expecting preferential benefits, such as customs exemptions, stressing the collective responsibility to provide efficient and environmentally friendly transportation.
Additionally, the Ministry is promoting the adoption of eco-friendly buses powered by clean energy sources, showcasing its commitment to aligning with global sustainability trends.
Minister Sayoud revealed ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive roadmap for addressing systemic challenges within the transport sector. This roadmap, currently under preparation, will soon be presented to the government and is expected to introduce forward-looking reforms and solutions.
The minister also addressed other pressing areas, such as air and maritime transport. He noted that private sector investment in these domains has remained limited despite recent legislative reforms aimed at encouraging participation. However, he reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with serious investors to unlock the potential of these critical sectors.
Highlighting the advancements in national air travel, Sayoud discussed Algeria’s flag carrier, Air Algérie, which is set to enhance its domestic and international operations. The airline is actively working to expand its flight schedules and improve customer satisfaction by acquiring 15 new aircraft, which will significantly ease existing travel pressures. Efforts are also underway to reduce delays in flight schedules, addressing a frequent customer concern.
On the security front, Sayoud outlined measures to modernize airport surveillance systems, including advanced video monitoring and state-of-the-art passenger and luggage screening technologies. These initiatives, aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards, aim to ensure passenger safety while mitigating risks, such as attempts at illegal migration.
This comprehensive plan underscores Algeria’s commitment to elevating its transport infrastructure and services, signaling a transformative era for the nation’s mobility landscape. With this strategic agreement and accompanying initiatives, Algeria is poised to redefine public transportation, making it more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable.
