Algeria Takes Proactive Measures to Ensure Market Stability Ahead of Ramadan

Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — Algeria’s Ministry of Interior Trade and Market Control, led by Minister Tayeb Zitouni, has unveiled a comprehensive preemptive plan aimed at averting potential market disruptions during the holy month of Ramadan. Speaking in a meeting with internal trade officials on Saturday, Minister Zitouni emphasized the urgency of involving productive sectors in these precautionary measures to maintain market stability and safeguard citizens’ access to essential goods.

Minister Zitouni highlighted the critical issue of food security, which has become one of Algeria’s most pressing challenges amid global crises and economic fluctuations. He reassured that Algeria is well-positioned to tackle these challenges, owing to its substantial material and natural resources, which can support the country’s self-sufficiency efforts. Despite ongoing attempts to undermine governmental decisions and disrupt market stability, the minister reaffirmed that Algeria has made significant strides in addressing these issues.

One of the key strategies put forth by the Ministry is the activation of local joint committees, which are continuously monitoring national market conditions. These committees are tasked with proposing necessary measures and providing immediate intervention when needed.

Moreover, the government has rolled out a refined and effective framework to regulate the national market, including digitizing regulatory procedures and strengthening economic monitoring measures. This initiative also includes a major overhaul of Algeria’s trade laws and regulations to align with the country’s evolving economic and social landscape, particularly in light of the rapid rise of e-commerce.

Minister Zitouni also announced plans for the revival of the “Magro” company in 2025, which currently oversees nine regional markets for fruits and vegetables. The company will undergo a modernization program to improve its operations, enhance the distribution of food products, and ensure the efficient organization of these essential markets.

In preparation for Ramadan, Minister Zitouni called on major professional organizations and consumer protection associations to actively contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring a steady supply of goods to local markets. He also encouraged these entities to introduce promotional offers and discounts to alleviate the financial burden on citizens while ensuring that the quality of goods remains intact.
