Algiers, Algeria | January 1st, 2024 — Algeria has officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for January 2025, marking a pivotal moment in its diplomatic mission to advocate for just causes and address global challenges. This presidency, coming a year after its election as a non-permanent member, underscores Algeria’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace, justice, and stability, with a particular focus on the Middle East and counterterrorism in Africa.

A Priority Agenda: Addressing the Middle East Crisis

At the heart of Algeria’s UNSC presidency lies a resolute commitment to the Palestinian cause and the broader Middle Eastern crisis. Algeria has announced plans to organize a ministerial-level public debate focusing on the situation in the Middle East, including the ongoing plight of occupied Palestine. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to participate, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

Fifteen months into the catastrophic genocidal aggression against Gaza, the UNSC has faced stark criticism for its failure to offer even minimal protection to Palestinian civilians. Despite efforts by Algeria and other elected members to foster dialogue and accountability, divisions within the Council have impeded decisive action. Algeria remains steadfast in its efforts to spotlight these issues, pushing for immediate and tangible solutions.

Algeria’s Diplomatic Achievements and Leadership

Under the direction of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria has intensified its efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The country, through its permanent representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, successfully secured a resolution in March 2024 demanding an immediate and lasting ceasefire, overcoming repeated vetoes that previously stymied similar initiatives.

Moreover, Algeria has reignited the push for Palestine’s full membership in the UN, a step seen as crucial for advancing the two-state solution enshrined in international law. This endeavor demonstrates Algeria’s unwavering commitment to a just and lasting peace in the region.

Focus on Syria and Yemen

In addition to its focus on Palestine, Algeria will lead critical discussions on the political and humanitarian situations in Syria and Yemen. The Council is scheduled to hear reports from UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and representatives from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reflecting Algeria’s comprehensive approach to regional stability.

Counterterrorism in Africa: A High-Level Meeting

Algeria’s presidency will also prioritize the fight against terrorism in Africa, hosting a high-level meeting to address the growing threat of terrorist activities across the continent. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized the importance of these discussions during a recent press conference, highlighting the need for collective action to ensure the security and stability of African nations.

A Historic Opportunity

Algeria’s leadership at the UNSC is not just a diplomatic milestone; it is a demonstration of its role as a champion for the rights and aspirations of Arab and African nations. As the month unfolds, Algeria’s presidency is expected to leave an indelible mark, reinforcing its position as a key player in shaping a more equitable and peaceful international order.
