Algiers- Algeria, May 15, 2024 – According to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) released on Wednesday, a significant development occurred in the fight against terrorism in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, as a terrorist known as ‘O. Chida,’ also known as ‘Abdelhak,’ surrendered to military authorities. The surrendered individual was found in possession of a Kalashnikov submachine gun and a quantity of ammunition. Additionally, during operations conducted from May 8th to 14th, the National People’s Army (ANP) arrested nine individuals suspected of providing support to terrorist groups across the country.
The statement highlighted the continuous efforts of the Armed Forces in combating various forms of organized crime and terrorism. In coordination with other security services, ANP detachments intercepted 110 drug traffickers and thwarted attempts to smuggle 310 kilograms of processed cannabis from the borders with Morocco. Moreover, significant quantities of cocaine and psychotropic tablets were seized, totaling 3,370 kilograms and 194,279 tablets, respectively.
In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and In Guezzam, ANP detachments arrested 326 individuals and seized various equipment used in illegal gold mining operations, including vehicles, power generators, jackhammers, and metal detectors. Additionally, in separate operations, 39 individuals were intercepted, and various items, such as shotguns, automatic pistols, fuel, foodstuffs intended for smuggling, and tobacco, were seized across the national territory.
Furthermore, the Coast Guards prevented clandestine migration attempts by intercepting 26 individuals aboard makeshift vessels along the national coasts. Additionally, 157 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were arrested across the country during the specified period. These operations underscore the ANP’s commitment to maintaining security and combating criminal activities throughout Algeria.
