ALGIERS- At the ongoing International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition (SIPA), Minister of Fisheries and Halieutic Productions, Ahmed Badani, seized the opportunity to unveil Algeria’s ambitious plans in the fishing industry during his visit to several stands and engagement with journalists.
Firstly, Minister Badani announced Algeria’s intention to establish farms for locally fattening its quota of bluefin tuna, aiming to add value and generate additional foreign exchange revenues. Highlighting advanced technical studies related to tuna fattening, he emphasized the necessity for technical expertise, particularly in nutrition. Algeria’s tuna exports reached 2023 tons in 2023, up from 1650 tons in 2022, generating revenues of $35 million, according to Badani.
Moreover, Minister Badani revealed that Algeria is ready to export fishing vessels due to advancements in boat construction. He mentioned ongoing discussions with African and Arab countries regarding the export of Algerian-made vessels. Diplomatic missions are actively supporting Algerian economic operators in this sector. The minister noted intense competition among manufacturers, which has propelled progress in boat construction.
Addressing concerns about licensing for fishing vessels, Minister Badani explained the challenges posed by the saturation of ports, accommodating over 6000 vessels compared to around 3000 a decade ago. He emphasized the rapid development of aquaculture, particularly in species such as sea bream, sea bass, and red tilapia, with locally produced fingerlings and feed.
The current edition of SIPA, held under the theme “For Sustainable Food Security” under the auspices of the President of the Republic, has attracted 174 exhibitors from Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Arab countries. Several agreements have already been signed between Algeria and African countries such as Cameroon and Mauritania, reflecting the event’s significance in fostering regional cooperation and economic partnerships.
The exhibition, running until tomorrow, serves as a platform for showcasing Algeria’s progress in the fisheries and aquaculture sector and highlights its commitment to sustainable food security and regional collaboration in the field of marine resources.
