Algeria to Import Over Two Million Doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Amidst National Livestock Protection Efforts

Algiers, Algeria | February 20th, 2025 — Algeria is set to reinforce its livestock protection strategy with the imminent importation of over two million doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries Youcef Cherfa announced on Thursday during a session at the People’s National Assembly (APN). This large-scale vaccination campaign comes as part of the government’s intensified measures to combat the highly contagious viral disease threatening the national cattle population.

Cherfa emphasized that this initiative builds upon previous efforts, which have already seen more than 500,000 livestock vaccinated in the last phase. “The importation of these additional doses is a critical step in safeguarding our national herd and securing the country’s animal wealth,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening biosecurity and disease prevention mechanisms.

2025: A Defining Year for Agricultural Land Regularization

Beyond livestock health, the minister also revealed that 2025 would mark a decisive turning point in the regularization of agricultural land, a longstanding issue that has impeded investment and development in the sector. In alignment with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives, the Ministry is preparing an interministerial instruction aimed at delivering a “definitive” resolution to all forms of agricultural land regularization.

“The year 2025 will witness the final settlement of all pending agricultural land disputes,” Cherfa asserted. “This process will ensure legal security for farmers and investors, thereby fostering sustainable agricultural growth and food security.”

As part of the broader rural development agenda, the minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating access to water resources for agricultural purposes. He reiterated the continuation of President Tebboune’s ambitious program for the drilling of artesian wells, which aims to support over 60,000 farming operations across the country.

Strengthened Measures Against Wildlife Trafficking and Illegal Hunting

In response to inquiries regarding Algeria’s strategy for wildlife conservation, Minister Cherfa underscored the government’s proactive approach in tackling poaching and the illicit trafficking of wild animals. He highlighted the importance of aligning national efforts with international commitments, noting that Algeria remains steadfast in its implementation of international treaties and conventions related to wildlife protection.

To bolster enforcement mechanisms, the Ministry has formalized a strategic partnership between the Directorate-General of Forests (DGF) and the Directorate-General of Customs. This landmark agreement, signed on January 25, seeks to enhance the country’s capabilities in curbing illegal animal trade and reinforcing ecological preservation efforts.

Moreover, Cherfa announced ongoing initiatives for the reproduction and rehabilitation of endangered wildlife species, a key component of Algeria’s biodiversity conservation strategy. These efforts, he explained, are crucial for restoring ecological balance and maintaining the integrity of natural habitats.

The government has also taken steps to regulate and oversee hunting activities, ensuring they are conducted in an organized and sustainable manner. In 2023, hunting activities were officially reintroduced, accompanied by structured training and licensing programs for hunters. Since 2018, a total of 28,796 individuals have been certified for hunting permits, reflecting a systematic approach to wildlife management.
