ALGIERS- The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that Algeria was gradually moving towards joining the BRICS group, noting that this membership would make the North African country stronger economically.
In an exclusive interview with Al-Jazeera podcast, President Tebboune said the real strike force is economic power. “Despite attempts by some parties to misrepresent Algeria’s economic indicators, reports from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank confirm that Algeria’s indicators are green and indicate that our economy is progressing and growing,” he maintained.
In this vein, President Tebboune recalled that his first mission, after his inauguration in 2019, was to revive the national economy, specifying that “the powerful countries are economically strong , and we are the third or fourth African economy in Africa. Algeria has no debt. We are the largest gas exporter in Africa”.
Addressing Algeria’s membership in the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), President Tebboune affirmed that “there is no refusal on the part of the BRICS member states,” referring to the agreement of “China, Russia and South Africa for the membership of Algeria in the group”. He affirmed that “neither India nor Brazil opposed. We await the decision which will be made public next August in South Africa”. “Algeria will initially integrate the BRICS group as an observer member before fully joining the organization, in a second stage”.
