ALGIERS- Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya saw the birth of a new strategic partnership as the leaders of these three nations convened in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, for their first consultative meeting.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, along with the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, met in Tunisia yesterday at the invitation of President Kaïs Saeïd.

Upon his arrival in Tunis, Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s solidarity with its neighbor, stating, “Our hearts are always with the Tunisian people… and with my brother Kaïs Saeïd.” This statement by the President of the Republic underscores Algeria’s unwavering support for Tunisia, reassuring the country of its ability to stand firm, as expressed by Tebboune upon his arrival at Tunis airport yesterday.

The three leaders reached an agreement on a strategic partnership to address common challenges, as stated in the final document of the meeting.

Furthermore, addressing regional and international issues that this new bloc must confront together, the three countries jointly decided to schedule future meetings in a country of their choice to discuss regional security, where they hold a common position.

Unified Voice

Specifically, the three leaders agreed to adopt a unified voice in regional and international institutions, as emphasized in the final declaration.

Additionally, the final document of the meeting highlights the three countries’ intention to establish common partnerships with international institutions and entities and to counter foreign interference while supporting partnerships within a multipolar world framework.

The leaders also discussed providing political support to Libya to encourage the completion of its political process through elections leading to the establishment of legitimate institutions. Beyond the Libyan political situation, there is a significant concern for the three countries regarding clandestine migration. To address this, they decided to establish a joint commission for the protection of their common borders and to halt illegal immigration.

Furthermore, the leaders addressed foreign interference, particularly in Libya, a phenomenon rejected by Algeria, which views it as exacerbating conflicts, especially in Libya where external powers contribute to the persistence of the crisis to serve their interests through financial and military support to conflicting parties. This concern extends to the Sahel region, as outlined in the final document of the meeting.
