Algiers, Algeria – Algerian television crews embarked on a journey from Tehran, the birthplace of the International Forum of Gas Exporting Countries in 2001, to delve into Iran’s utilization of natural gas as a cleaner vehicular fuel, a central theme to be discussed at the Gas Summit held in Algeria.

Sofiane Maknine, the Algerian television correspondent, underscored the substantial volume of vehicles crowding Tehran’s streets on a daily basis, exacerbating air pollution levels. In response, the Iranian government has actively promoted the adoption of natural gas as a fuel alternative, particularly targeting owners of large vehicles and taxis who traditionally rely on high-sulfur diesel. Transitioning to natural gas offers a notable reduction in air pollutants and mitigates the risk of soil or groundwater contamination, given its gaseous form, which swiftly disperses in the event of a leak.

In pursuit of this objective, it was highlighted that Iran has erected fully-equipped stations for dispensing natural gas, witnessing a notable uptick in requests for vehicle conversions to accommodate gas usage. Within this framework, an Iranian taxi driver lauded this endeavor, emphasizing the benefits of utilizing natural gas owing to its affordability, widespread availability, and eco-friendliness. With Iran boasting the world’s second-largest reserves of natural gas, it emerges as a compelling and sustainable alternative for vehicular fuel.

Moreover, the use of natural gas as a vehicle fuel is safe for engines, increases the overall lifespan of the vehicle, enhances fuel distribution and consumption efficiency, and ensures smoother and quieter engine operation.

During a meeting with the Head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Majid Chegeni underscored the government’s commitment to promoting the adoption of this eco-friendly energy source. He outlined the implementation of governmental initiatives aimed at assisting vehicle owners of all types in transitioning their cars to utilize natural gas, with the objective of mitigating environmental pollution. Chegeni emphasized the remarkable expansion of the natural gas vehicle infrastructure, facilitated by substantial government support in recent years. This support has translated into successful initiatives executed by the petroleum sector to elevate the rate of vehicle conversions to natural gas and establish refueling stations across the nation. Presently, the number of vehicles running on natural gas in Iran has surged to four million units.

Additionally, the General Manager reiterated his call to the private sector to lend a helping hand by supplying vehicles with natural gas fuel tanks.

This television report sheds light on Iran’s proactive approach towards sustainable transportation solutions, showcasing its commitment to reducing environmental pollution and promoting cleaner energy alternatives. As Algeria and other nations seek to address similar environmental challenges, Iran’s experience serves as a valuable model for adopting eco-friendly practices in the automotive sector.
