ALGIERS- Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for Peacekeeping Operations, affirmed on Monday in Oran that cooperation between Algeria and the UN is “extremely dense across all fronts.”

“The cooperation between Algeria and the UN is exceptionally dense, and it will become even more robust with Algeria’s upcoming presence on the UN Security Council for the 2024-2025 term,” he stated after an audience with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf.

During the meeting, various issues were addressed, including the situation in the Middle East. Lacroix highlighted that, within the scope of his responsibilities, he discussed the conditions of various UN operations in the region, emphasizing the difficulties, challenges, and threats they face.

“We also discussed several topics related to the African continent, and I thanked the Minister for Algeria’s support in the context of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), as well as the challenges and prospects regarding the security and political situation in the Sahel,” Lacroix explained.

The Deputy Secretary-General also mentioned that he discussed the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) with Minister Attaf, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to ensure the continuation of this mission and the political process.

Describing the discussion with Attaf as “extremely useful, rich, and very important,” Lacroix expressed gratitude to Algeria for hosting the conference. He highlighted the significance of the conference, bringing together African peace and security actors from the African Union and current and upcoming non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Given the number, importance, and gravity of the issues at hand, Lacroix emphasized that UN participation in the meeting was “extremely essential.” The diplomatic exchanges underscored the depth of collaboration between Algeria and the UN, emphasizing the country’s pivotal role in regional and international peace and security efforts.
