Algiers, Algeria | May 17, 2024 —During a presentation delivered in Italy as part of the International Forum “Towards the South: the European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Era in the Mediterranean Region,” Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Energy and Mines, unveiled Algeria’s comprehensive energy strategy. Arkab elucidated Algeria’s strategic objectives and proposed initiatives in the energy sector, emphasizing several pivotal points:

Diversification and Sustainability:

Arkab emphasized Algeria’s steadfast commitment to augmenting primary energy production, with a specific emphasis on natural gas, while concurrently ensuring a sustainable long-term energy supply by mitigating adverse environmental impacts. Algeria aims to amalgamate conventional energy production methodologies with the advancement of renewable energy sources to effectively mitigate environmental challenges.

Renewable Energy Goals:

The Minister reiterated Algeria’s firm commitment to attaining 30% renewable energy incorporation into the national energy mix by 2035. This pledge aligns with the National Renewable Energy Program’s objectives, which strive to establish a production capacity of 15,000 megawatts, with 3,000 megawatts already operational.

Hydrogen Production:

Arkab accentuated Algeria’s aspiration to emerge as a prominent contender in the realm of hydrogen production. Leveraging its abundant solar energy resources, extensive electricity grid, gas transportation network, water reserves, and human capital expertise, Algeria aims to spearhead hydrogen production endeavors.

Regional Energy Hub:

Algeria endeavors to position itself as a pivotal energy hub within the region, facilitating energy exchanges through initiatives such as electrical interconnections and the establishment of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor with Europe. Arkab deliberated on Algeria’s crucial role in fostering energy integration and propelling shared prosperity within the Mediterranean and Europe.

National Infrastructure Development:

The Minister meticulously outlined the ongoing development of the national electrical grid interconnection between northern and southern Algeria, representing a significant investment totaling approximately $3 billion. This infrastructure project is imperative for fostering energy integration, particularly concerning renewable energy sources, and facilitating electricity exports to Europe and neighboring African nations.

Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline:

Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which is slated to connect Nigeria to the Mediterranean coast via Algeria and Niger. This initiative is anticipated to substantially contribute to Europe’s natural gas supply, bolster energy security, and foster social and economic development within transit countries.

Hydrogen Transport:

Algeria intends to engage in strategic dialogues with European counterparts to establish the South H2 Corridor, facilitating the transportation of renewable hydrogen from Algeria to Germany via Tunisia, Italy, and Austria. This ambitious endeavor necessitates robust partnerships between the public and private sectors to mobilize substantial investments for infrastructure development.

Arkab’s presentation serves as a testament to Algeria’s proactive stance towards sustainable energy development and underscores its pivotal role in regional energy cooperation and integration.
