Algeria Unveils National Pharmaceutical Vigilance and Alert System to Ensure Drug Supply Stability

Algiers, Algeria | January 25th, 2025 — In a significant development aimed at safeguarding Algeria’s pharmaceutical supply, the country’s Ministry of Interior Trade, in partnership with several key governmental bodies, has unveiled the “National Pharmaceutical Vigilance and Alert System” on January 25, 2025. This comprehensive system, designed to monitor the entire pharmaceutical supply chain—from production and importation to distribution and inventory management—aims to ensure a steady and reliable supply of medicines and stabilize the national pharmaceutical market.

The system was presented in a high-level briefing attended by key stakeholders, including Tayeb Zitouni, Minister of Interior Trade and Market Regulation, alongside Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Sifi Ghrieb, Minister of Digital Transition, Meriem Benmouloud, and the Minister Delegate for Pharmaceutical Production, Fouad Hadji. These officials underscored the multi-ministerial collaboration that has shaped the system, reflecting a united approach to addressing Algeria’s pharmaceutical challenges.

Developed by the High Commission for Digital Transition in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, the Ministry of Interior Trade, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the new system is designed to monitor and track pharmaceutical supplies in real time. Its primary objectives are to ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential medicines and provide a strategic tool for regulating and optimizing the national pharmaceutical market. The system is also intended to facilitate better coordination between government ministries and private sector stakeholders, enhancing transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
