Algiers, Algeria | September 19th, 2024 — In response to the deteriorating situation in Lebanon following a series of large-scale cyberattacks, Algeria has formally requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This appeal, made on behalf of Lebanon, seeks to address the grave developments that have resulted in significant civilian casualties and heightened tensions in the region.

The Lebanese government has described the attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, as a “gross violation of Lebanese sovereignty” and “a full-scale crime.” These cyberattacks, orchestrated by the Zionist entity, triggered widespread explosions, claiming the lives of multiple civilians and leaving hundreds injured. Algeria’s call for the UNSC meeting reflects its deep concern over the humanitarian impact and the potential for further destabilization in an already fragile region.

According to a statement released by the Algerian Press Service (APS) on Wednesday, the explosions were linked to cyber operations that specifically targeted Lebanese infrastructure. The most recent attack, during the funeral of four Hezbollah martyrs in Beirut, resulted in the tragic deaths of nine people and left more than 300 others wounded. This escalation underscores the urgent need for international intervention to prevent a full-scale regional conflict.
