ALGIERS- In a recent UN Security Council meeting on the forced displacement of Palestinians, Algeria, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, passionately called upon the international community, especially the Security Council, to unanimously reject the forced displacement of Palestinians.

During the meeting initiated by Algeria, Ambassador Bendjama reiterated the sentiments expressed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing that “what is happening in Gaza will remain a mark of infamy in the conscience of humanity.” He urged everyone present not to remain silent in the face of these developments, stating that “silence is synonymous with complicity.” Additionally, he emphasized the urgency of addressing the situations in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Ambassador Bendjama posed critical questions to the international community, asking whether the death of over 23,000 people, including 10,000 children, and the injuries sustained by more than 60,000 others were not sufficient. He pointed out the destruction of over 60% of structures in Gaza, leading its inhabitants to face famine. He questioned whether the international community would accept over 2 million people suffering from hunger and disease.

The Algerian representative underscored that the plan for forced displacement is being implemented across Palestinian territories through bombings, colonization, and land annexation. He affirmed that such plans are destined to fail and declared, “We must reject the forced displacement of Palestinians. Palestinians have no place other than their land. Any forced displacement is a blatant violation of international law, especially Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

Drawing attention to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, the destruction of infrastructure, and the targeting of symbols of life, Ambassador Bendjama highlighted the aim to make the region uninhabitable and extinguish hope among Palestinians to return home. This strategy, he argued, seeks to facilitate their displacement from their lands and obliterate the Palestinian cause by emptying occupied territories of their populations.

In conclusion, Ambassador Bendjama reiterated Algeria’s call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, reaffirming unwavering support for the Palestinian people until the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
