ALGIERS- In a passionate appeal, Algeria has called on members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to reactivate the role of the group representing NAM at the United Nations Security Council. The aim is to empower this group to take effective initiatives to end the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip and lift the imposed blockade.

During a meeting of the NAM Palestine Committee in Kampala, Uganda, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for international intervention. Algeria proposed tasking the NAM group at the UN Security Council to address the ongoing war and ensure the Council fulfills its responsibilities in ending Zionist attacks, lifting the blockade, halting forced displacements of Palestinians, and removing obstacles hindering humanitarian aid.

Attaf underscored that while the nature of the crimes against the Palestinian people remains consistent, what is unprecedented is the relentless and barbaric escalation of attacks in what has become a genocidal war lasting for four months, with a devastating toll.

The minister warned of the genuine threat of the conflict’s expansion into a regional war, especially in light of the heightened tensions in neighboring regions, referencing the military escalation against Yemen and the risk of a broader regional conflagration.

He criticized the obstinacy of the Zionist occupiers who refuse to deliver justice to the Palestinian people, disregarding the imperative of addressing the root cause of this unjust conflict and the brutal aggression faced by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Expressing concern about the ongoing discussions focusing on post-war scenarios, Attaf stressed the need to prioritize an immediate ceasefire and an end to the aggression before considering any post-war arrangements. He outlined four imperatives for any future arrangements: stopping the war in Gaza, implementing a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire, holding the Zionist occupiers accountable for their crimes, and putting an end to the impunity they currently enjoy.

Minister Attaf commended the Non-Aligned Movement for its steadfast and historical solidarity with the Palestinian people. He called for diplomatic actions commensurate with the gravity of the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. The minister also praised South Africa for filing a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and urged similar actions to involve the International Criminal Court (ICC).
