Algiers, Algeria | October 10th, 2024 — The Algerian delegation, speaking before the UN Security Council, made a forceful plea for decisive international intervention to halt the “merciless Zionist war machine” wreaking devastation across Gaza and, increasingly, into Lebanon. In a strongly worded statement delivered during the debate on the Middle East, including the Palestine Question, Algeria condemned the daily massacres, rampant destruction, and systematic violations of international law by Zionist forces.
The debate, convened at the request of Algeria and Slovenia, underscored the urgency of addressing the dire humanitarian crisis engulfing Gaza, where the relentless bombardment has left entire cities in ruins, tens of thousands dead, and hundreds of thousands displaced. The representative from Algeria did not mince words, stating that “massacres and killings have tragically become a daily reality in Gaza, and they continue unabated.” The situation in the West Bank, marked by illegal settlements and the ongoing annexation of Palestinian land, further complicates the broader regional landscape.
A Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding in Gaza
The sheer scale of the destruction in Gaza is staggering. According to the Algerian delegation, over 42,000 people have been killed, 60 percent of whom are women and children. Nearly 100,000 more have been injured, with approximately six percent of Gaza’s population either killed or wounded in just the past year. The Zionist military’s actions have not only caused immense human suffering but have effectively erased 900 families from the civil registry, with over 17,000 children now orphaned and unaccompanied.
In addition to the human toll, infrastructure in Gaza has been decimated, with 60 percent of buildings destroyed. What was once a bustling region now resembles a desolate landscape, as the Algerian delegation painted a chilling picture of Gaza as an “apocalyptic scene that is horrifyingly real.”
Violations of International Law and Forced Displacement
Algeria condemned recent threats by Zionist forces to forcibly remove patients, displaced persons, and medical staff from hospitals in northern Gaza, calling these actions “a blatant violation of international law” and a criminal attempt to implement forced displacement policies. The delegation challenged the international community, asking if this is how humanitarian law treats patients and medical personnel. The silence and inaction of the global community were framed as complicity in these crimes, as Algeria warned that the absence of accountability is emboldening the Zionist occupation.
The representative’s words were damning: “Silence has become more than mere complicity; it is an active participation in these crimes.”
Zionist Blockade and Weaponization of Starvation
Beyond the bombings, the blockade imposed by the Zionist entity has led to a deliberate attempt to “slowly kill Palestinians in Gaza through starvation.” The restrictions on humanitarian aid are severe, with only 52 aid trucks entering Gaza per day—down from over 500 trucks before last year’s escalation. This drastic reduction in aid has left 96 percent of the population facing crisis-level food insecurity, a stark reality the Algerian delegation argued amounts to the weaponization of starvation.
The delegation cited the findings of UN Special Rapporteur Michael Fakhri, who accused the Zionist entity of using starvation as part of its genocidal campaign. Algeria called for the international community to act, noting that starvation as a method of warfare is a war crime prohibited by multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
Attacks on Humanitarian Agencies and UNRWA
Algeria further highlighted the tragic loss of 222 UNRWA staff members, with two-thirds of the agency’s facilities damaged or destroyed. The Zionist entity’s aggression towards UNRWA is seen as part of a larger agenda to dismantle the organization, which Algeria views as “the backbone of humanitarian action” in Gaza and a symbol of the Palestinian refugees’ inalienable rights.
Despite continuous attempts by the Zionist entity to undermine UNRWA, Algeria insisted that Palestinian refugees’ rights remain intact and are not subject to any form of expiration or manipulation by the occupier.
A Call for Immediate Action
Algeria concluded its address with an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire, warning that further delay would lead to an unprecedented regional war. “Force will not bring security,” the delegation stressed. “The occupation will not last.”
In its final remarks, Algeria called on the international community to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people, stating unequivocally that lasting peace and security in the Middle East can only be achieved by ending the Zionist entity’s occupation of Arab lands and ensuring the full realization of Palestinian self-determination.
