Algeria Urges United Efforts to Tackle Global Security Challenges at UN Security Council

Algiers, Algeria | January 03rd, 2024 — In a statement made on Thursday, Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, highlighted the alarming surge of global threats to peace and security, calling for a unified and effective response from the international community.

Addressing attendees at the ceremony marking the installation of flags for the new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, Bendjama stressed the widespread nature of current security challenges. “The world is confronted with numerous challenges that threaten international peace and security,” he declared. “The situation in the Middle East remains deeply concerning. Additionally, other regions, including Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia, face significant security issues.”

Bendjama emphasized the need for persistent and effective action in the face of these mounting global crises, urging the international community to uphold the values of multilateralism. “It is our responsibility to work tirelessly and efficiently, defending the virtues of multilateralism and promoting peace and security worldwide,” he asserted.

The Algerian diplomat also took the opportunity to highlight Algeria’s role in the UN Security Council, marking its presidency for the month of January. “It is an honor for me to address this assembly while Algeria assumes the presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations for this month,” he expressed.

Further acknowledging the collaborative nature of the Council, Bendjama extended heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing elected members for their distinguished mandates, praising their fruitful contributions to global peace efforts. He also warmly welcomed the newly elected members, including Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, to the Security Council. His remarks underscored the importance of fostering cooperation among nations to address pressing global security concerns, reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to supporting peaceful solutions in an increasingly volatile world.
