ALGIERS- In a significant step towards advancing aquaculture development, the Minister of Fisheries, Ahmed Badani, and the Minister of the Popular Authority for Fisheries of Venezuela, Juan Carlos Loyo Hernandez, convened in Oran on Friday. Their discussions culminated in the decision to dispatch scientific missions aimed at enhancing shrimp farming in Algeria and red tilapia cultivation in Venezuela.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition, Minister Badani expressed his aspiration to bolster freshwater shrimp farming, leveraging Venezuela’s extensive expertise in this domain. He highlighted Algeria’s existing aquaculture farm for freshwater shrimp in the province of Ouargla, which serves as a potential starting point for expanding this activity.
Conversely, the Venezuelan minister expressed keen interest in Algeria’s experience with red tilapia farming, particularly in the realms of genetics and feed production. Hamza Habbache, the Director of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Fisheries and Halieutic Productions, emphasized Algeria’s comprehensive mastery of the red tilapia farming chain, encompassing hatching and feed manufacturing.
Beyond aquaculture, the ministers explored opportunities for collaboration in port management, scientific research, and the import-export of aquaculture products during their meeting. The discussions underscored the mutual commitment of Algeria and Venezuela to fostering bilateral cooperation and leveraging each other’s strengths for sustainable aquaculture development.
The decision to initiate joint scientific missions reflects a shared vision of harnessing scientific expertise and best practices to optimize aquaculture productivity and contribute to food security and economic growth in both countries. Through collaborative efforts, Algeria and Venezuela aim to unlock the full potential of their aquaculture sectors and build a resilient and prosperous future for their people.
