ALGIERS- In a significant step towards enhancing economic cooperation, the inaugural flight of Venezuelan airline Conviasa from Caracas to Algiers arrived on Sunday evening. Beyond its symbolic value, this flight carried a delegation of officials and business leaders led by Venezuela’s Minister of Productive Agriculture and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, along with ministers of transportation, tourism, and fisheries. Welcoming the delegation at Algiers International Airport were Algerian Minister of Transportation Mohamed Habib Zahana and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Youcef Cherfa, who serves as the president of the Algeria-Venezuela Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Commercial, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation.
Fostering Bilateral Cooperation in Agriculture and Beyond
The Agriculture Minister highlighted that the inauguration of this direct air route between two countries with historical ties aims to promote bilateral cooperation in alignment with the quality of political dialogue between Algeria and Venezuela. The focus extends to economic collaboration, particularly in the agricultural sector, where two agreements were signed in 2023.
His Venezuelan counterpart emphasized that this flight signifies the realization of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s vision and aligns with the instructions of the leaders of both countries.
Connectivity for Diverse Communities and Economic Sectors
This new air route is expected to facilitate travel for various communities residing in Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, allowing them to transit through Algiers to reach the Arab, Middle Eastern, Far Eastern, African, and European regions, according to the Venezuelan Minister.
Cherfa urged Algerian and Venezuelan business operators to work towards strengthening partnerships, particularly in sectors related to food security and sovereignty.
Forum Highlights Economic Potential and Complementarity
On the sidelines of the Algerian-Venezuelan business forum organized by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (Crea), Minister Cherfa stated that Algeria has adopted a strategy to diversify its economy, ensure food security, and encourage foreign investment, especially in strategic agriculture.
The Venezuelan Minister noted that the 80 accompanying businessmen, representing various sectors, including energy, agriculture, tourism, industry, and trade, would further strengthen economic and commercial relations between Algeria and Venezuela. He highlighted the agricultural complementarity that can be achieved through mutual trade and emphasized the potential for cooperation in Algeria’s expertise in gas, particularly in the field of gas-based electricity.
Multi-Modal Transportation and Expanding Trade Routes
Minister of Transportation Mohamed Habib Zahana expressed optimism that this air link would foster the development of economic and commercial relations between the two countries. He confirmed ongoing efforts to materialize maritime connections to facilitate goods transportation.
Venezuelan Transport Minister Ramon Velasqueza stated that from Algiers, 50 destinations to Africa and Asia would be offered through a rapid and cost-effective air liaison. Simultaneously, operators from Algeria could access destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean from Caracas, creating a comprehensive network of travel possibilities based on bilateral agreements.
Unveiling Opportunities for Mutual Investment
During the business forum, Crea President Kamel Moula underscored the potential for partnerships between the two countries across various domains. He emphasized addressing challenges in food, health, and energy security while highlighting investment opportunities in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and tourism.
The direct air connection marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Algeria and Venezuela, unlocking avenues for economic collaboration and mutual benefit.**
