Algiers, Algeria | July 25th, 2024 — On Thursday, Algeria issued a strong condemnation of France’s recent endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, labeling the decision as “unexpected, untimely, and counterproductive.” The Algerian government expressed its intent to “draw all necessary consequences” from France’s position, holding the French government fully accountable.

In a formal statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed profound regret and disapproval regarding France’s unequivocal support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty. This endorsement, officially communicated to Algerian authorities by France in recent days, was criticized for reflecting “dubious political calculations, morally questionable assumptions, and unsupported legal interpretations.”

The ministry argued that France’s support does not advance the peaceful resolution of the Western Sahara conflict. Instead, it reinforces a deadlock perpetuated by Morocco’s long-standing autonomy plan, which has been in effect for over seventeen years. The ministry emphasized that the Western Sahara issue is widely recognized internationally as a matter of decolonization. France’s stance, it stressed, distorts and undermines this process by legitimizing a colonial fait accompli and supporting Morocco’s disputed sovereignty over the territory.

The Algerian government denounced the French position, noting the inappropriate timing of the decision coming from a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Such a stance is expected to align with the council’s decisions and international legal standards, yet France’s actions seem to contravene these principles.

The statement further highlighted that France’s decision undermines ongoing United Nations efforts to revitalize the search for a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. This, in turn, impedes progress towards achieving peace, stability, and security in the region.

The Algerian government concluded by asserting that France’s decision “does not serve the cause of peace in Western Sahara,” contributes to prolonging the current impasse, and reinforces the colonial status quo in the territory. The statement underscored Algeria’s commitment to holding France fully responsible for the implications of its decision and its impact on the conflict.
