ALGIERS- In a press conference held at the Peace Stadium in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, ahead of the crucial Algeria vs Burkina Faso match, national team coach Djamel Belmadi reflected on Algeria’s performance in the first match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
“We had worked to secure the three points in the first match, unfortunately, it didn’t happen, but we remain determined and focused for the match against Burkina Faso, which will be tough but essential for the future,” said Belmadi.
Regarding the upcoming Burkina Faso clash, Belmadi emphasized, “We are ready and focused for this encounter, which is important but not crucial, as we have a third match in the group stage. Tomorrow’s match will be difficult; we know Burkina Faso. I won’t judge this team; I’ll just say it’s a very good team. Their recent results in the Africa Cup prove that, like Mauritania, who played a great match.”
Addressing criticism of the team captain, Riyad Mahrez, Belmadi stated, “Criticism of Mahrez is not new. He was criticized in 2019. I don’t focus on what others say. Mahrez is a European champion. He has no issue with criticism. Those who talk about Mahrez or me are known. We prefer to stay focused on our work.”
Ismaël Bennacer, the Algerian midfielder, also shared his thoughts on the upcoming match: “Burkina Faso? It’s an important match, but not decisive. We remain focused. We were disappointed with the result because we work hard. Now, we are concentrated on the next match, which is crucial. It won’t be an easy match, but we’ll do everything to win, inshallah. Team spirit will be key against Burkina Faso. We need to manage the strong and weak moments well, without pressure. It will be very hot, but we will give our all, whether it’s at 2 PM, 6 PM, or 8 PM,” assured Bennacer.
