Algeria Welcomes Gaza Ceasefire Agreement, Urges Comprehensive Implementation and Lasting Peace

Algiers, Algeria | January 16th, 2025 — Algeria has expressed profound satisfaction following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza after more than 15 months of relentless Zionist aggression, emphasizing the urgency of alleviating the immense suffering of the Palestinian people.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) hailed the long-awaited ceasefire as a crucial step towards ending the systemic injustice inflicted on Palestinians amid the ongoing war of extermination. The Ministry stressed that this cessation of hostilities should mark the beginning of a broader process aimed at achieving lasting peace and justice in the region.

“The ceasefire agreement, long overdue, represents a glimmer of relief for the Palestinian people who have endured unbearable suffering under the yoke of a relentless aggression. However, the true test lies in the full implementation of this agreement, ensuring its comprehensive execution across all dimensions,” the statement declared.

Algeria commended the tireless efforts made by the international mediation group that facilitated the agreement. The Foreign Ministry, however, underscored the necessity of ensuring that the truce is fully respected, calling for the immediate activation of a permanent and sustainable ceasefire mechanism. It further insisted on the unconditional lifting of all restrictions hindering humanitarian aid destined for the Palestinian population and the complete withdrawal of Zionist occupation forces from Palestinian territories.

The Ministry emphasized that Algeria’s consistent diplomatic efforts within the United Nations Security Council have long sought such progress, considering this ceasefire a partial yet significant response to the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.

“This ceasefire, though a critical step, must be complemented by more substantial measures, including the reconstruction of Gaza and the unification of all Palestinian territories,” the statement continued. Algeria reaffirmed that genuine peace and stability in the Middle East could only be achieved through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, emphasizing that this is the sole path toward a just, lasting, and definitive resolution to the Zionist-Palestinian conflict.

The Ministry concluded with a call for the international community to uphold its moral and legal responsibilities, ensuring that the ceasefire paves the way for the restoration of Palestinian sovereignty, justice, and security across the entire region.
