Algiers, Algeria | December 21st, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic development, Algeria expressed its strong approval of the United Nations Security Council’s unanimous adoption of a resolution renewing the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on Friday. The resolution extends the mission’s mandate until June 30, 2025, marking a key moment in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Golan Heights, which has been a contentious region for decades.

Algerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, emphasized the critical importance of this resolution for both Syria and the wider region. In his remarks following the adoption of Resolution 2766 (2024), co-sponsored by the United States and Russia, Bendjama underscored that the renewal of the UNDOF mandate occurred at a particularly sensitive time for Syria, amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.

The resolution specifically reiterates the need for all parties to adhere to the terms set forth in the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which stipulates that no military forces, military equipment, or personnel—other than those deployed by UNDOF—are allowed within the designated separation zone. Bendjama stressed that the presence of Zionist forces in this zone remains “illegal” and constitutes a “blatant violation” of both the 1974 agreement and pertinent UN Security Council resolutions, including the recently adopted one.

In a pointed condemnation, the Algerian representative reiterated that there can be no justification for the continued presence of Zionist forces in the separation zone, which continues to undermine the terms of the disengagement agreement, as well as regional peace efforts. “This illegal presence violates the spirit and letter of the UN resolutions,” Bendjama asserted.

Furthermore, the Algerian envoy drew attention to the ongoing violations committed by Zionist forces, including attacks on Syrian infrastructure—both civilian and military—along with the continued occupation of Syrian territories. These actions are seen as clear contraventions of the disengagement agreement and Security Council resolutions, further destabilizing the region and prolonging the suffering of the Syrian people.

Bendjama also highlighted the recent protests in the Daraa Governorate of Syria, where local residents, expressing opposition to the illegal presence of Zionist forces, were met with violent repression. Zionist soldiers opened fire on demonstrators, injuring at least one young man.
