Algerian Ambassador to the U.S. Sabri Boukadoum: “Our Priorities Focus on Strengthening Military and Economic Cooperation with the United States”

Algiers, Algeria | February 19th, 2025 — Algeria is prioritizing the reinforcement of its strategic partnership with the United States in both military and economic spheres, according to Algerian Ambassador to Washington, Sabri Boukadoum. The diplomat outlined Algeria’s vision for 2025 in an exclusive interview with Today Business Focus, emphasizing intensified cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense and increased American investments in Algeria’s growing economic landscape.

Ambassador Boukadoum revealed that extensive discussions have taken place with the new U.S. administration regarding the current and future dimensions of bilateral relations. “Our objective is to consolidate our partnership with the United States, particularly in security and economic domains, while contributing to global stability,” he stated.

Military Cooperation: A Key Pillar of Bilateral Relations

Highlighting the significance of military collaboration, Boukadoum underscored the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Algeria and the U.S. Department of Defense, through its Africa Command (AFRICOM). He described this agreement as a gateway to expanded defense cooperation, allowing both nations to address security challenges in North Africa, the Sahel, and beyond.

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions, Algeria views its military coordination with Washington as both a necessity and an opportunity. The ambassador reaffirmed Algeria’s proactive engagement with the U.S. and other members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to tackle pressing global security issues.

“As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Algeria remains committed to advancing peace and stability, particularly in the Middle East, the Sahel, and across Africa,” Boukadoum stated. He also reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering stance on Gaza, stressing the urgent need to end violence and achieve a sustainable ceasefire. “The Palestinian cause remains a top priority for Algeria, and we will continue to push for a just and lasting resolution,” he asserted.

Economic Expansion: A Booming Investment Destination

Beyond security cooperation, Algeria is positioning itself as a prime destination for American investment. Ambassador Boukadoum underscored the country’s vast economic potential, noting that Algeria—Africa’s largest nation—is endowed with abundant natural resources and a young, dynamic workforce.

While hydrocarbons remain a key sector, Algeria is diversifying its economy, with agriculture emerging as a focal point of U.S.-Algeria trade relations. Boukadoum cited the recent importation of 25,000 heads of American cattle by an Algerian private enterprise as a testament to the strengthening agricultural ties between the two countries.

“The energy sector continues to be attractive for investors, but we are witnessing a surge of interest in agriculture, mining, and renewable energy,” Boukadoum noted. With global demand shifting towards sustainable solutions, he expressed confidence that Algeria’s rich mineral reserves and expansive solar potential would draw significant foreign investment in the coming years.
