Algiers, Algeria | September 25th, 2024 — In a critical week of counterterrorism operations from September 18 to 24, 2024, the People’s National Army (ANP) successfully neutralized two terrorists and apprehended twelve individuals accused of supporting terrorist groups. This significant achievement was announced by the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) on Wednesday, underscoring the ongoing efforts to protect national security and dismantle terrorist infrastructures.
The MDN’s operational report highlights the professionalism and unwavering readiness of the Algerian Armed Forces to safeguard the country. “In the sustained efforts to combat terrorism and multifaceted organized crime, units and detachments of the People’s National Army carried out several high-impact operations, showcasing the exceptional vigilance, professionalism, and perpetual availability of our Armed Forces across the national territory,” the communiqué stated.
One of the standout operations occurred in the Tébessa region, where ANP forces eliminated two terrorists and recovered a semi-automatic Simonov rifle, along with other military equipment. The high-precision operation is indicative of the military’s effectiveness in combating terrorist threats, particularly in areas prone to insurgent activity.
Adding to these efforts, another significant victory was achieved when the notorious terrorist Ouled El Bekkay Mohamed, also known as “Hamma,” surrendered to military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, within the Sixth Military Region. The terrorist turned himself in, along with a Kalashnikov submachine gun, a substantial amount of ammunition, and other materials.
The ANP’s success extended beyond direct counterterrorism efforts. Across the country, 12 individuals suspected of aiding and abetting terrorist groups were apprehended in a series of coordinated operations. These arrests mark a critical blow to the logistical networks supporting terrorism and demonstrate the army’s capability to disrupt the backbone of terrorist operations.
In parallel, the ANP continues its robust crackdown on organized crime, particularly in the fight against drug trafficking. Coordinating with various security agencies, the ANP intercepted 30 drug traffickers in multiple operations across different military regions. These efforts thwarted attempts to smuggle 11 quintals of treated cannabis from the Moroccan border, a known hotspot for narcotrafficking. Additionally, 13.21 kilograms of cocaine and 862,398 psychotropic pills were seized, further solidifying Algeria’s firm stance against drug cartels.
In the southern regions of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, and Tindouf, the ANP arrested 237 individuals involved in illicit activities, including illegal gold mining. The seizure of 17 vehicles, 92 generators, 49 jackhammers, and a variety of explosives and detonating equipment intended for illegal mining highlights the army’s continued efforts to combat illegal economic activities and protect national resources.
Furthermore, 15 other individuals were arrested for various crimes, and military units confiscated a Kalashnikov submachine gun, five automatic pistols, ten hunting rifles, 76,730 liters of fuel, 68 quintals of tobacco, and 386 tons of food products destined for smuggling and speculation. These operations, carried out across the national territory, emphasize the multi-faceted nature of the threats facing Algeria and the comprehensive response by the ANP.
In the fight against illegal migration, the Algerian Coast Guard successfully prevented 176 individuals from attempting to flee the country aboard makeshift vessels along the national coastline. Additionally, 288 undocumented immigrants of various nationalities were apprehended in operations conducted throughout the national territory, further showcasing Algeria’s commitment to maintaining border security and controlling the flow of illegal migration.
The operations carried out during this period reflect the ANP’s tireless commitment to maintaining national security, ensuring the integrity of Algeria’s borders, and neutralizing threats posed by terrorist groups and organized criminal networks. The Ministry of National Defense’s statement underscores the continued dedication of the ANP in its role as the primary guardian of the nation’s stability and sovereignty.
