The ANP, the successor to the Algerian Liberation Army (ALN), is integral to Algeria’s contemporary defense strategy. President Tebboune reaffirmed this role during his visit to the Ministry of National Defense in May, noting that “the preservation of national sovereignty depends on a formidable army and a robust economy,” and adding that “the National People’s Army is both resilient and continually strengthening” to uphold national sovereignty.

General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the ANP, has emphasized the army’s commitment to modern technologies, aiming to fully actualize professionalization and enhance its deterrent capabilities.

Political scientist Mehdi Boukaouma highlights the ANP as the direct successor to the ALN. “Our army has consistently symbolized national unity and has been instrumental in establishing a modern and secure state post-independence,” he observes. Boukaouma also underscores the ANP’s proactive stance in addressing regional and global security challenges, portraying it as a modern and agile military force.

According to Boukaouma, the National Day of the ANP serves to emphasize the deep connection between the military and the public, fortifying national unity and trust in the armed forces.
