ALGIERS- Algeria’s People’s National Army (PNA) stands as a proud symbol of the country’s independence, identity, and national unity, taking the torch from the National Liberation Army (NLA) fifty years ago and faithful to the oath taken to the valiant martyrs to defend the territorial integrity and watch over the security of its brave people.
This army, devoted to the fatherland, has displayed unwavering commitment to its constitutional duty of defending the nation and safeguarding the well-being of its people. Its deep connection with the citizens it serves has made it a true popular army, winning the trust and admiration of the entire nation.
Throughout its history, the PNA has faced various challenges, proving its ability to overcome any obstacles that come its way. In moments of crisis, the army has stood firmly with the Algerian people, providing protection against any adversity. This close bond between the people and the army has been fundamental to Algeria’s progress, leading the nation in the right direction with cohesion and trust.
Since its inception in the early hours of Independence, the PNA has exemplified an inclusive and unifying force, embracing all its citizens as brothers in arms, regardless of their diverse backgrounds. This cohesive approach enables them to undertake a vital responsibility in safeguarding national sovereignty while actively participating in the liberation efforts of other fraternal nations. By extending unwavering support to various national liberation movements pursuing decolonization through armed struggle, the Algerian army demonstrates a commitment to the principle of non-interference in the affairs of neighboring countries. Through these noble endeavors, they stand as a beacon of hope and solidarity, fostering regional stability and progress while championing the aspirations of oppressed peoples in their quest for freedom and independence.
Over the years, the PNA has been actively involved in not only defending the nation but also participating in major national development projects. From constructing the Green Dam in 1969 to slow down desertification to building the trans-Saharan road, the army has shown its commitment to the country’s prosperity beyond military matters.
One of the hallmarks of the PNA’ service to the nation has been its role in combating terrorism during the early 1990s. With valor and professionalism, the army defeated radical Islamist groups and restored peace to the nation after a prolonged period of turmoil.
Moreover, the PNA has made significant efforts to modernize its institution, investing in training and technology. The establishment of schools of excellence and elite training programs showcases its dedication to professionalism and preparedness.
A school of patriotism
National service, introduced in April 1969 by virtue of Ordinance No. 68-82 of April 16, 1968, has been a vital aspect of the army’s contribution to the nation. This mandatory service has not only prepared young Algerians for military responsibilities, but has also been a source of personal development and societal cohesion. Through national service, young Algerians have gained exposure to modernity and contributed to the nation’s progress.
The PNA’s unwavering commitment to Algeria’s future and security has garnered admiration and respect for the entire nation. Despite the challenges inherited from a painful colonial past, the PNA has demonstrated its dedication to preserving national sovereignty and upholding the values of justice and democracy.
The strong bond between the Algerian people and their army has been the backbone of the nation’s triumphs and a formidable rampart against adversaries. Together, the people and the PNA have faced hardships, and together they have emerged victorious, reinforcing confidence in a prosperous future for Algeria.
The Algerian nation remains grateful to the PNA and its elements, as well as other security forces, for their selfless sacrifices in the service of the fatherland. The PNA’s commitment to fighting corruption, supporting the people, respecting the Constitution, and encouraging dialogue between all parties has showcased the army’s genuine patriotism and its unwavering dedication to safeguarding Algeria’s well-being.
The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has consistently recognized the PNA’ sacrifices and devotion to the nation. The entire nation pays tribute to the ANP for thwarting the plots of enemies and laying the foundation for a strong and democratic state with Algerian values at its core.
As Algeria faces various challenges, both domestic and international, it is reassuring to know that the People’s National Army stands strong and united with its people, ready to face any hurdles that come its way. With the PNA as its worthy heir, the spirit of sacrifice and dedication to the fatherland that was ignited half a century ago will continue to illuminate Algeria’s path toward progress and prosperity.
