Algiers, Algeria | December 25th, 2024 — The Ministry of National Defense has released a detailed operational report outlining the extensive actions taken by the Algerian Army between December 18 and December 24. The operations underscore the military’s continued efforts to safeguard national security and combat various forms of organized crime and terrorism.

In a significant counterterrorism success, the Army reported that the notorious terrorist “Rekadi Sid Ahmed,” known as “Abu Al-Baraa,” voluntarily surrendered to military authorities in the region of Bordj Badji Mokhtar. He was found in possession of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, four 82mm mortar shells, ammunition, and other materials. Additionally, the military apprehended eight individuals providing logistical support to terrorist groups across the nation, further crippling extremist networks.

Efforts to combat organized crime were equally noteworthy. In a series of operations conducted in coordination with various security services, Algerian forces arrested 33 drug traffickers and intercepted two quintals and 34 kilograms of processed cannabis being smuggled across the border from Morocco. The operations also resulted in the confiscation of three FMPK assault rifles, two Kalashnikov submachine guns, and a massive haul of 2,460,875 narcotic pills.

In the fight against illegal mining and unregulated extraction of resources, the Algerian Army’s efforts proved decisive. During operations in southern Algeria, military units detained 457 individuals involved in illicit mining activities, and seized 59 vehicles, 296 generators, 212 jackhammers, four metal detectors, as well as significant quantities of raw gold, explosives, and mining equipment. These actions are part of the ongoing crackdown on illegal gold mining, which continues to be a major security challenge in the region.

The Army’s operations also targeted various smuggling and trafficking rings. Authorities seized 12 hunting rifles, two automatic pistols, over 41,000 liters of fuel, 128 quintals of tobacco, and 29 tons of food products meant for illegal trade. These operations, spread across different regions, illustrate the military’s commitment to protecting Algeria’s borders and disrupting criminal networks.

Moreover, Algeria’s Coast Guard succeeded in thwarting multiple illegal migration attempts. Seven individuals were rescued from makeshift boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean illegally. Additionally, 44 other migrants of various nationalities were apprehended as they attempted to enter Algeria illegally. These actions reflect the military’s increasing efforts to secure the nation’s coastlines against growing migration challenges.

This weekly operational report highlights the Algerian Army’s vigilance and effectiveness in responding to national security threats. From dismantling terrorist cells and disrupting criminal smuggling operations to safeguarding borders and protecting the public, the military continues to be a key pillar of national stability and security.
