Algiers, Algeria | January 19th, 2025 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over the opening ceremony of the National Conference on Cinema on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers. This event, held under the President’s high patronage, marked a pivotal step in Algeria’s commitment to rejuvenating its cinematic sector and fostering a competitive and culturally rich film industry.
The ceremony commenced with the screening of a compelling documentary tracing the evolution of Algerian cinema and its deep-rooted connection to the nation’s revolutionary history. Reflecting on the visuals, President Tebboune expressed his profound gratitude to the trailblazing figures who established Algeria’s cinematic legacy, remarking, “What we witnessed today is a testament to the revolutionary spirit that gave birth to Algerian cinema. These achievements were not coincidental; they were forged by patriots who fought for this nation.”
The two-day conference, gathering an extensive array of professionals from the seventh art, aims to lay the groundwork for a strategic overhaul of the Algerian film industry. Participants will engage in comprehensive dialogues to propose innovative solutions for advancing cinematic production, boosting its socio-cultural impact, and unlocking new investment opportunities in this vital sector.
In his keynote address, President Tebboune underscored the state’s unwavering dedication to cultural development and its recognition of cinema as a vital pillar of Algeria’s identity and progress. “This conference reflects our commitment to culture and to the audiovisual sector as one of its essential components. It underscores our ambition to meet the aspirations of creators and intellectuals in the field of cinema,” he stated.
The President called on attendees to chart a forward-looking vision for Algerian cinema, emphasizing the need for creativity and innovation that aligns with the country’s heritage and values. “You are tasked with shaping the future of Algerian cinema by presenting ideas and crafting bold, modern strategies that establish this dynamic industry as a cultural mirror of Algeria’s identity and national pride,” he urged.
Highlighting the availability of substantial financial and logistical resources, President Tebboune affirmed Algeria’s readiness to elevate its cinema to international standards, stating, “We have the means to build a cinematic industry worthy of the country of martyrs and the grandeur of Algeria.” He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering artistic freedom while respecting the nation’s traditions. “You have absolute freedom in creativity, except where it contradicts our customs and values,” he added.
The National Conference on Cinema, organized by the Ministry of Culture, aims to produce a comprehensive and participatory roadmap to meet the challenges of contemporary filmmaking. Scheduled for January 19–20, 2025, the event seeks to forge actionable strategies for establishing a modern, competitive Algerian cinema industry capable of reflecting and amplifying the country’s cultural and historical richness.
As President Tebboune concluded his address, he called for cinema to take its rightful place in Algeria’s new era of development and progress. “It is time to crown our cultural endeavors as the pinnacle of our nation’s transformation and dynamism,” he said, encapsulating the spirit of the event and Algeria’s aspirations for its cinematic future.
