Algerian Coast Guard Saves Russian Sailor Near Cap Djinet

Algiers, Algeria | December 17th, 2024 — In a remarkable display of professionalism and efficiency, the Algerian Coast Guard successfully rescued a Russian sailor from a vessel flying the Hong Kong flag, off the coast of Cap Djinet, located in the first military region of Algeria. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense released on Tuesday, the rescue operation was initiated after the regional maritime guard and rescue center received a distress signal reporting a sailor in peril aboard the ship.

The vessel, en route from Bulgaria to the Strait of Gibraltar, was located approximately 12 nautical miles northwest of Cap Djinet when the distress call was made. In response to the urgent request, the Algerian Coast Guard deployed a rescue helicopter, “66-MS,” from the 560th Search and Rescue Squadron based in the first military region. The helicopter swiftly reached the vessel and safely evacuated the sailor, who was in critical condition, to the public hospital in Zeralda for immediate medical treatment.

This successful operation highlights the Algerian Coast Guard’s continued commitment to maintaining high standards of readiness and operational efficiency, ensuring that lives are saved at sea under all conditions.

This recent mission follows a notable previous rescue carried out by the Algerian LNG tanker, Tessala, in August. At that time, the Tessala was called into action by the Italian Coast Guard to assist in rescuing migrants whose boat had capsized off the coast of Sardinia. The Algerian ship responded swiftly to the request, rescuing 30 migrants of various nationalities. The crew of the Tassala provided the survivors with food and supplies before resuming their normal maritime operations.

Both of these operations are a testament to the Algerian Coast Guard’s unwavering dedication to humanitarian assistance and maritime safety, reinforcing their pivotal role in saving lives and protecting human dignity at sea.
