Algiers, January 21, 2024 – Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, has sounded a warning about the potential negative impacts of the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within the realm of media. Emphasizing the risks associated with disregarding values, individual privacy, regional integrity, community sentiments, and national interests, Laagab underscored the need for careful consideration in the adoption of AI in media, particularly concerning data manipulation.

In an interview with “Radio Africa FM” following his role as the guest of honor at the third annual conference of Arab media professionals organized by the Union of Arab Broadcasting in Tunisia last week, Minister Laagab expressed his concerns. During the event, he lamented the perceived delay in the evolution of artificial intelligence, urging a more proactive approach to harness its potential benefits responsibly.

While exercising caution, Minister Laagab also acknowledged the positive aspects of AI applications, which took center stage at the aforementioned forum. He emphasized their potential for enhancing technical aspects of radio and television channels, specifically in terms of image and sound quality, reflecting a commitment to embracing digital media advancements.

Minister Laagab’s remarks underscore a nuanced perspective on the integration of AI in the media landscape. He stressed the importance of leveraging AI applications responsibly, recognizing the potential for technical improvements without compromising ethical standards or infringing on privacy rights. By doing so, he envisions a future where AI contributes positively to the advancement of media platforms while safeguarding the values and privacy of individuals and communities.
