Algerian Council of the Nation Cuts Ties with French Senate Over Western Sahara Stance

Decision Condemns French Senate Speaker’s Visit to Occupied Laâyoune as a Grave Violation of International Legitimacy

Algiers, Algeria | February 26th, 2025 —In a resolute and unequivocal response to the alarming escalation of political recklessness, the Algerian Council of the Nation announced on Wednesday the immediate suspension of all relations with the French Senate. This includes the termination of the parliamentary cooperation protocol signed between the two chambers on September 8, 2015.

 

The decision comes in the wake of a highly controversial visit by the Speaker of the French Senate to the occupied city of Laâyoune, in the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). This act, condemned by Algeria as a flagrant affront to international legitimacy, underscores what the Council describes as a “dangerous drift” within France’s political landscape, marked by the growing dominance of the far right and its increasingly reckless foreign policy maneuvers.

“In a continuous and extremely grave deviation, reflecting the rise of the French far right and its increasing stranglehold on the political and decision-making spheres in France, the Speaker of the French Senate has undertaken a visit to the occupied city of Laâyoune. This act, both unacceptable and unsurprising, constitutes a blatant disregard for international legitimacy and stands in stark opposition to the United Nations Security Council resolutions—which France, as a permanent member, is duty-bound to uphold. Rather than championing human rights and the right of colonized peoples to self-determination, this move attempts to undermine, erase, annul, and deny these fundamental principles,” read a strongly worded statement issued by the Bureau of the Council of the Nation under the chairmanship of Salah Goudjil, President of the Algerian upper house.

Algeria, a staunch advocate for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, views this visit as an explicit endorsement of Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara. This provocative action not only contradicts France’s professed commitment to international law but also reveals a hypocritical approach to fundamental human rights and the decolonization process.

The Council of the Nation’s decision to sever ties with the French Senate signals Algeria’s unwavering stance in support of the Sahrawi cause and its broader rejection of any attempt to legitimize Morocco’s occupation.
